My Guardian – A digital lifeline for Ugandan migrant workers

Published: 05/05/2025

Through its mobile app, My Guardian offers protection, support, and financial tools to Ugandan migrants in the Middle East. With a loan from OVO, this innovative initiative gained momentum and impact.

Every year, thousands of Ugandans head to the Middle East for work—often without a safety net. My Guardian offers exactly that. Its smart app helps locate and support migrant workers in distress, while also providing structured services such as bank accounts, insurance, and secure money transfers. With offices in Riyadh and Kampala, the team is building a network that merges technology with compassion.

A social investment with impact
With a €10,000 loan from Ondernemers voor Ondernemers, My Guardian opened two operational hubs, expanded its staff, and launched an upgraded version of its app, featuring a built-in remittance system and enhanced security. Strategic partnerships with UAERA, ELAU, and Equity Bank further reinforced the initiative. Notably, the loan was fully repaid on time — a clear sign of the team’s financial discipline and commitment.

Strong results

  • 564 bank accounts opened for female migrant workers
  • A tailored insurance scheme developed for migrants
  • A remittance company currently in development
  • 7 staff members, including 6 women and 3 young employees

My Guardian proves that gender equality (SDG 5), decent work (SDG 8), and partnerships (SDG 17) can go hand in hand with tech innovation. The company also explores ecological and social inclusion, including through collaboration with a clean cookstove provider.

Looking ahead
Despite delays due to technical upgrades and insurance negotiations, the long-term vision is clear: a full-service digital platform for protection, financial inclusion, and reintegration. A rehabilitation center for rescued workers is already in the planning stage.

« OVO’s support gave us breathing room — and the confidence to grow. »
